WORLD COMMUNITY ARTS DAY, 17 FEBRUARY 2009
Statement by Ms Linda Fabiani MSP, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture
I am delighted to add my voice in support of the 3rd World Community Arts Day which will be held on 17 February 2009, and I do hope that as many people as possible will get involved.
I know that this is a day which will be celebrated around the world. That the event has, in such a short space of time, found so many thousands of international friends and like-minded people illustrates the importance of art in its broadest sense. But I don’t see any harm in banging the drum especially for the people of Scotland. The World Community Arts Day connects to a Scottish ethos that uses art as a positive force to change and improve its own society. The strength of Scotland’s contemporary arts and culture can tell the world in a powerful way that Scotland is a vibrant, technologically advanced and innovative country. I firmly believe that our many cultural assets can help us move confidently into the future by building on our creative talents and rich heritage.
The Scottish Government is fully committed to widening access to culture for all communities and individuals across Scotland, and I see culture’s place in this nation as a key force in delivering prosperity. It is our identity, and something we should all celebrate. Culture sits at the heart of our best endeavours. And let us never forget or overlook the main reason we want more people taking part – the sheer joy, fun and fulfilment that culture brings.
I applaud World Community Arts Day and urge others to support and celebrate this event - take part, get creative and above all, enjoy yourselves!
